Disney Appoints Former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as Chief Technology Officer

The Walt Disney Company has announced the appointment of Karandeep Anand as its new Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, bringing in a seasoned executive with extensive experience across cloud infrastructure, consumer technology, and artificial intelligence. Anand, who most recently served as the chief executive officer of Character.AI, will officially step into the newly created role on October 2. He will report directly to Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro as the entertainment giant looks to modernize its core digital systems and strengthen its technological infrastructure.

In his new capacity, Anand will take charge of a broad portfolio encompassing enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product development, and engineering operations. According to Disney, his mandate includes working closely with technology teams across all of the company's business segments. This overarching strategy aims to reshape how digital products are built and delivered, ensuring that the company's operations keep pace with evolving consumer expectations and modern media consumption habits.

Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro highlighted Anand's diverse background when announcing the appointment. D’Amaro noted that Anand possesses a rare combination of expertise spanning infrastructure, consumer technology, and artificial intelligence. Describing him as an expert builder and strategist with both technical and product-focused mindsets, D’Amaro emphasized that Anand has sharp instincts for what audiences want and maintains a clear understanding of the intersection between technology and creative expression.

Anand’s career spans over two decades at several of the world's most prominent technology companies. He spent 15 years at Microsoft, where he held senior product and engineering roles and contributed to the team that built the Azure cloud computing platform. Following his tenure at Microsoft, Anand transitioned to Meta, taking on various leadership positions within the Facebook organization. Most recently at Meta, he served as the vice president of Ads and Business Products, overseeing large-scale commercial technologies.

Before taking the helm at Character.AI, Anand also served as president and chief product officer at the financial technology company Brex, broadening his professional footprint into the fintech sector. His most recent role at Character.AI placed him at the forefront of the consumer artificial intelligence boom. During his tenure, the conversational AI platform experienced rapid expansion, building a substantial consumer audience and reinforcing his specialization in AI-driven digital products.

Anand's move to Disney comes at a time when the entertainment conglomerate is placing an increased emphasis on advanced technology and its direct-to-consumer digital relationships. Platforms like Disney+ remain critical components of the company's long-term strategy as executives look to craft more deeply connected experiences for fans worldwide. Industry observers note that several members of Character.AI’s technical team are also expected to transition to Disney alongside Anand to support his technological initiatives.

An educational background in computer science underpins Anand’s extensive technical career. He holds a degree from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. Over the course of his professional journey, he has transitioned from cloud architecture and enterprise platforms at Microsoft to social media monetization at Meta, financial infrastructure at Brex, and consumer-facing artificial intelligence.

The creation of this senior technology leadership role underscores Disney's broader commitment to integrating emerging tools into its traditional entertainment ecosystem.
