According to the judiciary's Mizan news website, the Tehran prosecutor's office acted against what it described as an illegal facility that had operated for years under the guise of language instruction.
The judiciary alleged that the French Language Centre (CLF) conducted illegal acts that violated diplomatic conventions. Officials accused the institution of abusing its status as a language training facility, claiming it sought to identify and build networks among the country's elite figures while facilitating their departure.
The closure immediately drew a sharp response from the French government. The French Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday declaring that the action represented a new and unacceptable attack on the French cultural presence in Iran.
Characterizing the move as unjustifiable, the French Foreign Ministry stated that Paris would take appropriate measures in response to the shutdown. Furthermore, at the request of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, the ministry announced plans to summon Iran's ambassador.
The closure of the language centre occurs against a backdrop of increasingly strained diplomatic relations between Tehran and Paris in recent months. Tensions have flared across multiple fronts, including disputes involving diplomatic personnel.
Last month, France announced the expulsion of two Iranian diplomats. That measure came in direct response to the brief arrest and travel ban imposed on two French envoys to the Islamic republic by Iranian authorities.
During that previous incident, Tehran accused the detained French diplomats of interfering in Iran's internal affairs. The accumulation of diplomatic expulsions, detentions, and now the shuttering of the cultural and language institution highlights the deepening diplomatic rift between the two nations.
