Pakistani Authorities Detain Sister of Imprisoned Former Prime Minister Imran Khan

Pakistani authorities detained Aleema Khan, the sister of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in Lahore as part of a security crackdown ahead of a planned political demonstration. According to reporting by The Hindu, citing sources, Ms. Aleema was transferred to Kot Lakhpat jail following her apprehension.

The detention comes ahead of a planned protest scheduled for September 27 by Mr. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The demonstration aims to pressure the government into releasing the former prime minister and cricketer-turned-politician, who has been incarcerated since 2023 and is currently 73 years old.

Local officials executed the detention under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. This legal provision grants local law enforcement the authority to arrest individuals who are perceived as a potential threat to public peace. The 30-day detention order was officially issued by Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ijaz.

Ms. Aleema has been actively advocating for the release of her brother, who has faced numerous legal battles since he was removed from office. Mr. Khan was ousted from power in April 2022 following a parliamentary no-confidence vote and has since encountered a multitude of legal cases.

Noreen Niazi, another sister of the PTI founder, spoke to Geo News regarding the incident. She stated that she received information indicating Ms. Aleema was taken into custody as she was leaving her home and subsequently moved to Kot Lakhpat jail.

Expressing dismay over the actions taken by authorities, Ms. Noreen questioned the government's approach. "I do not know why they are so worried that they are arresting women as well," she remarked to the news outlet.

The detention drew swift condemnation from the political opposition. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram sharply criticized the move and demanded that Ms. Aleema be presented before a court immediately.

"A sister is being punished for speaking up for her brother," Mr. Akram stated in a public post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Individuals detained under the provisions of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance retain specific legal avenues for recourse. Detainees have the right to challenge the detention order directly in the High Court or submit a formal representation against the measure to the provincial government.

The broader political climate in Pakistan remains tense as the PTI prepares for its upcoming mobilization efforts. The party's planned September 27 protest is expected to test the government's stance on public demonstrations and ongoing opposition activities surrounding Mr. Khan's imprisonment.
