Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé breaks silence on Ceuta shirt controversy

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding a pre-match demonstration supporting the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta. According to reporting by Euronews by Rafael Salido, Mbappé broke his silence to explain why he, alongside teammates Vinícius Júnior and Ibrahima Konaté, partially covered up a message on a t-shirt backing Ceuta prior to a match against Elche.

The incident took place ahead of the Tuesday fixture. The initiative to wear the shirts had been proposed by the home side, Elche, and was subsequently accepted by Real Madrid. However, during the pre-match protocol, the three Real Madrid players adjusted the garments so that a specific portion of the printed message was obscured.

The slogan printed on the shirts featured the phrase "We are all mackerel," which serves as a traditional nickname for the inhabitants of Ceuta, followed by the words "Our city, our homeland." By partially wearing or covering the shirts, the players drew immediate public attention and subsequent criticism.

Following the match, LaLiga president Javier Tebas openly criticized Mbappé, Vinícius, and Konaté for failing to wear the t-shirts properly as intended by the league-backed initiative.

Speaking to the newspaper AS in statements reported by Euronews, Mbappé sought to clear the air and provide context for his actions. "I want to explain it properly so that people understand," the French international forward stated.

Mbappé emphasized that the players had been expected to put on the initiative-driven apparel arranged by the clubs. He explicitly stated that his actions were not intended as a rejection of the local population of Ceuta.

"The first thing I want to say is that I stand in full solidarity with Ceuta and with all the victims. Because before being a player, I am a human being," Mbappé told AS. He added that he harbors no ill will toward the residents of the city.

"I have nothing against them, and I support them 100 percent — my thoughts are with them," Mbappé said, acknowledging that the players had found themselves in a difficult position during the pre-match protocol.

In addition to addressing the local population, the Real Madrid striker explained that he wanted the gesture to encompass a broader humanitarian focus, specifically remembering migrants who have died or are facing severe hardships.

"I also wanted to have a gesture and a thought for all the migrants who have lost their lives and who are also living in harsh conditions," the French forward explained, highlighting the dual perspective that influenced his decision.
