Sydney Dream Pop Duo Completes Nine Gigs in 12 Hours Despite Helicopter and Plane Mishaps

Sydney dream pop duo Fathom recently attempted a Guinness World Records title by performing nine shows across New South Wales and Canberra within a strict 12-hour window. The ambitious challenge, reported by ABC news, required vocalist Cate Guirguis and keyboardist Jaxon Italiano to travel from Singleton to Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Penrith, Lithgow, Bathurst, and Goulburn before concluding their journey in Canberra. Each of the nine performances had to last a minimum of 15 minutes. Furthermore, the designated venues were required to be situated at least 50 kilometres apart in areas with populations exceeding 15,000, with at least half of those locations registering populations of 100,000 or greater. While the band utilized a tour bus for the majority of the transit, the intensive route additionally incorporated a car, a chartered plane, and a helicopter.

The attempt nearly faltered multiple times due to unexpected logistical setbacks. The first notable obstacle arose in Sydney. Italiano had anticipated that navigating traffic between Sydney and Penrith would present a significant hurdle, and an accident along the M4 motorway ultimately slowed their transit down further.

A far more critical complication surfaced immediately following their performance in Penrith. Fathom had coordinated a helicopter flight over the Blue Mountains intended to transport them to Lithgow while bypassing the closure of Victoria Pass. Upon arriving at the helibase early, however, the scheduled aircraft was missing. Guirguis noted that they needed to depart by 5:10 pm to comply with regulations prohibiting flights after sunset. Head office officials subsequently informed the duo that the helicopter had been dispatched to help extinguish active bushfires in the Blue Mountains. Italiano acknowledged that emergency firefighting efforts constituted a valid reason for the disruption. The resulting delay spanned approximately 30 minutes before the pair finally secured their helicopter transport to Lithgow to resume the challenge.

The itinerary encountered additional turbulence during the leg between Bathurst and Goulburn, where the musicians had booked a chartered flight. Initially, Guirguis admitted they arrived at the wrong terminal. Once they were prepared to depart, a mechanical issue emerged. Italiano stated that the plane's right propeller failed to function precisely as the aircraft commenced takeoff. To resolve the situation safely, the pilot upgraded the pair to a jet, a decision Italiano described as fantastic and much safer. These compounding transportation setbacks left the duo roughly an hour behind schedule, forcing them to successfully reach Canberra, establish their equipment, and execute their final performance before the 12-hour limit expired.

The final road stretch proved more advantageous. Guirguis recounted encountering consecutive green traffic lights all the way to the destination. Upon arrival, the musicians went straight on stage to deliver their 15-minute set. Italiano recalled checking the countdown timer and discovering only about 15 seconds left before the deadline.

Beyond the record attempt, the tour served a charitable purpose by raising funds for the mental health organization Beyond Blue, generating at least $2,200. Fathom structured ticket sales so that half of the proceeds went to Beyond Blue while the remaining half supported the backing bands performing alongside them, ensuring the duo made no personal profit. Italiano highlighted that the music industry had faced severe economic strain since the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that musicians experience significantly higher rates of depression and anxiety associated with securing work.

Completing the nine performances does not automatically confer official Guinness World Records status. Fathom must now compile and submit comprehensive evidence for organizational verification, a process that could take several months. Requirements include proving through ticket links that at least 10 individuals attended every venue, maintaining at least two continuous witnesses throughout the attempt, and providing video documentation, including body-worn camera footage worn by Italiano on his chest. In the meantime, the duo released a companion track titled 'Record Breakers' to soundtrack their endeavor and plans to take a well-earned break.
