British Tennis Star and Six-Time Grand Slam Champion Joe Salisbury Retires

Former world number one doubles player and six-time Grand Slam doubles champion Joe Salisbury has brought his professional tennis career to a close. According to BBC Sport tennis correspondent Russell Fuller, the 34-year-old British athlete chose the US Open as his final competitive tournament.

Salisbury concluded his career alongside his long-time partner, Rajeev Ram, with the duo reaching the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows. Ram had also independently decided that the tournament would mark his final appearance on the professional circuit, making their final run together a fitting conclusion to a successful partnership.

The setting for Salisbury's retirement carried deep significance. In 2023, Salisbury and Ram achieved a historic milestone at the US Open by becoming the first pair in the modern era to win three consecutive men's doubles titles at the tournament.

Throughout his career, Salisbury cemented his status as Britain's most successful men's doubles player of the Open Era. His impressive trophy collection includes six Grand Slam titles. Alongside his three consecutive US Open victories with Ram, he also claimed the 2020 Australian Open men's doubles title with the same partner. In addition to his men's doubles success, Salisbury secured two mixed doubles titles partnering with Desirae Krawczyk.

Beyond his Grand Slam triumphs, Salisbury reached the pinnacle of the sport by attaining the world number one ranking in doubles. His overall resume boasts 17 tour-level titles, which notably include back-to-back victories at the prestigious season-ending ATP Finals in 2022 and 2023.

Reflecting on his departure from the sport, Salisbury revealed that he had been contemplating his future for quite some time. He stated that he is now entirely at peace and satisfied with his choice to step away from the professional tour.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Salisbury expressed deep gratitude for his journey in professional tennis. He noted that the sport had been the central focus of his life for as long as he could remember, adding that he felt exceptionally fortunate to have experienced so many opportunities and achievements.

Salisbury described the experience of traveling across the globe and earning a living through tennis as a lifelong dream fulfilled. He acknowledged that he never initially imagined living the life or enjoying the level of success that ultimately defined his career.

Concluding his reflective message, the British player emphasized that he left nothing out on the court, stating that he gave the sport his absolute best effort and can look back on his accomplishments with immense pride and zero regrets.

Earlier in the year, Salisbury addressed some of the personal challenges he faced while competing on the international circuit. He took a three-month break at the start of the year after speaking with BBC Sport about experiencing anxiety while touring.

At the time, Salisbury explained that while the anxiety did not appear to significantly hinder his actual performance on the tennis court, it generated an overwhelming feeling of dread that diminished his overall enjoyment of life on the road.

Despite the hurdles encountered during his final seasons, Salisbury leaves the sport with a legacy defined by historic achievements, multiple major titles, and a standing as one of the finest doubles players in British tennis history.
