How Donyell Malen Transformed From Aston Villa Fringe Player to Europe's Top Scorer at Roma

Just eight months after struggling to make a significant impact at Aston Villa, Netherlands international Donyell Malen has emerged as the most prolific scorer in Europe's top five leagues. According to data examined by BBC Sport, no player has scored more goals than Malen since his debut for Italian club Roma on 18 January.

The 27-year-old forward has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround following his move to Serie A, transforming from a player who found it difficult to establish himself in the Premier League into one of the continent's most productive attacking forces. Since his Roma debut, Malen has netted 20 goals, outperforming high-profile stars such as Harry Kane with 16 goals and Lamine Yamal with 15 goals across the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1.

In addition to leading the goalscoring charts, Malen also paces Europe's top five leagues for combined goals and assists with 22. This puts him ahead of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, who has 20, Barcelona's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal with 19, and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane with 18. No other player across Europe's top divisions has made a greater direct contribution in front of goal during the same timeframe.

The statistical contrast between his time in England and his current spell in Italy is stark. During his 46 appearances for Aston Villa, Malen scored 10 goals and registered two assists. Since joining Roma, he has accumulated 21 goals and provided three assists across just 25 matches. Furthermore, his scoring rate has drastically improved from one goal every 149.8 minutes while playing in the Premier League to one goal every 96.7 minutes in Rome.

While confidence and individual form have undoubtedly played a role, tactical deployment appears to be a major factor behind the resurgence. Data suggests that Roma have successfully found a specific role that maximizes the player's natural attacking instincts. At Aston Villa, Malen was frequently deployed across the frontline and spent only 52% of his league minutes playing as a central striker. In contrast, under manager Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma, 99% of his Serie A minutes have come directly through the middle, establishing him as the primary focal point of the attack.

This tactical shift has placed Malen consistently in positions where he can cause the most damage to opposing defenses. French football journalist Julien Laurens highlighted this central importance following Roma's 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce in the Champions League, a match in which Malen provided the assist for his side's goal. Speaking to Match of the Day, Laurens praised the Dutchman's development.

"He has been incredible since January," Laurens stated, noting that Malen has proven to be extremely efficient and clinical. "Malen is at the heart of everything they do with the ball."

Malen's resurgence is part of a broader trend of former Premier League players thriving after moving to Italy's Serie A. Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has excelled since transferring to Napoli in August 2024, scoring 22 goals which places him among the top goalscorers in the division. Another former Manchester United forward, Rasmus Hojlund, has also experienced a notable upturn in fortunes, recording 19 goal involvements since his Napoli debut, trailing only Federico Dimarco, Lautaro Martinez, and Malen.

These collective successes underscore how a transfer to Serie A can offer players a different environment and tactical setup to flourish. For Malen specifically, the transition has resulted in one of the most notable revivals in European football over the past year. Rather than fundamentally altering his playing style, Roma have simply unlocked his potential by utilizing him almost exclusively as a central striker, helping him rediscover the formidable form that initially drew the attention of top European clubs.
