Charles Barkley Pledges $1 Million to St. Mary's Academy Following Historic Math Discovery

Former NBA star and sports analyst Charles Barkley has committed $1 million to St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans following a historic mathematical breakthrough achieved by two of the school's students. The donation is structured as a 10-year gift intended to enhance educational opportunities and resources for students at the institution.

The academic achievement that sparked the contribution was accomplished by Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson while they were still high-school seniors at St. Mary's Academy. The two students tackled a complex mathematical problem that had puzzled scholars for generations by developing a new proof for the 2,000-year-old Pythagorean theorem using trigonometry.

For centuries, mathematicians generally believed that attempting to prove the Pythagorean theorem via trigonometry could result in circular reasoning, as many standard trigonometric formulas rely on the theorem itself. However, Johnson and Jackson bypassed this obstacle by utilizing the Law of Sines. Their innovative approach successfully demonstrated that the trigonometric relationship they applied did not inherently depend on the Pythagorean theorem, allowing them to construct a valid and independent proof.

The students spent months working through the intricate calculations, accumulating numerous pages of mathematical work before presenting their findings. Their breakthrough gained wider recognition after they shared their work at an American Mathematical Society conference in March 2023.

Barkley later learned about the students' accomplishment after watching media coverage of their achievement on television. Moved by their story, the former NBA player decided to support the school, aligning with his frequent public advocacy for encouraging young Black students to pursue rigorous academic and professional careers in fields such as medicine, law, engineering, and teaching, rather than viewing athletics as their sole path to success.

The financial commitment was structured over a decade to provide sustained support. According to reports, the initial portion of Barkley’s $1 million donation reached St. Mary’s Academy by September 2024. School leadership, including President Pamela Rogers, noted that the funds are designated to strengthen the overall educational experience and expand opportunities for students both within the classroom and throughout the broader New Orleans community.

By the time the donation and its impacts were widely publicized, both students had graduated and transitioned to higher education. Calcea Johnson enrolled at Louisiana State University, while Ne’Kiya Jackson began her studies at Xavier University. Their transition to university marked the continuation of academic journeys that began with their high school's unique mathematical discovery.

Barkley's contribution to St. Mary's Academy mirrors a broader pattern of philanthropic support for educational institutions by the former athlete, who has previously made substantial donations to other educational causes, including his alma mater, Auburn University. Through this latest gift, his ongoing interest in academic development has directly intersected with the lasting achievement of two New Orleans students.
