Human Remains Found in London Wildfire Identified as Missing Mother Joanne Sheen

Human remains discovered in a south-west London woodland following a wildfire have been positively identified as belonging to Joanne Sheen, a mother-of-three who had been missing since December 2019. The identification marks a significant development in a long-running investigation that spans nearly seven years.

According to the BBC, Sheen was 44 years old when she was last seen on 5 December 2019, after traveling from Fareham to Southampton with a friend. Her family formally reported her missing in February 2020, two months after her disappearance. Previous police investigations noted that Sheen did not have a permanent address, vehicle, or bank account, complicating early efforts to trace her whereabouts.

The discovery of the remains occurred after the London Fire Brigade responded to a blaze on 5 August that damaged approximately two hectares of shrubland in an area known as Bedfont Pits, close to Bedfont Lakes Country Park in Feltham. A week later, on 12 August, a member of the public discovered bones in the shrubland area that had been damaged by the fire, prompting Metropolitan Police officers to cordon off the site.

Following the discovery, a post-mortem examination indicated that the remains belonged to a woman aged between 25 and 45. Subsequent forensic work confirmed the identity as Joanne Sheen. Following the positive identification, detectives in London have formally handed the ongoing investigation over to Hampshire Police.

In connection with the case, a 56-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities confirmed that he remains in police custody as the inquiry progresses.

Prior to this discovery, Sheen's disappearance had triggered a major, multi-year inquiry led by law enforcement. Hampshire Police described the case as long and complex, noting that investigators had pursued more than 4,000 lines of inquiry, recorded over 300 statements, and conducted detailed searches at more than 10 addresses as well as numerous vessels. Several individuals had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder in 2020, though no charges were brought at that time and the case remained unsolved until now.

Detective Chief Inspector Toby Elcock, speaking from the Major Crime Team, addressed the tragic milestone. While acknowledging that the discovery is not the outcome the family or investigators hoped for, he expressed hope that the identification would begin to provide answers following years of uncertainty.

DCI Elcock praised Sheen's family for showing tremendous strength and dignity under unimaginable circumstances, stating that thoughts remain with them during this difficult time. He emphasized that the police remain fully committed to establishing the exact sequence of events that led to Sheen's death and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement has urged anyone with information regarding Joanne Sheen's disappearance or the circumstances surrounding her death to come forward. Additionally, Crimestoppers has agreed to reinstate a £20,000 reward for information that directly supports the active police investigation.
