Sister of Pakistan's Imprisoned Former Prime Minister Imran Khan Arrested in Lahore

Aleema Khanum, the sister of imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been detained by authorities in the eastern city of Lahore, according to statements from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

The detention took place on a Sunday afternoon, prompting sharp condemnation from PTI officials who have characterized the action as an illegal measure. Her son has publicly demanded her immediate release and safe return.

The official arrest order, issued by the deputy commissioner of Lahore, alleges that Khanum was actively mobilizing her brother's supporters through public meetings and social media platforms. Under the terms of the order, she is slated to face a 30-day detention period and will be transferred to Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore.

Khanum has maintained a high profile as a vocal critic of the legal proceedings against her brother, frequently engaging with media outlets and addressing his political supporters. Prior to confirmation from law enforcement officials, her family reported having no communication or knowledge regarding her location.

Her son, Shahrez Khan, posted on social media demanding transparency from the government regarding her whereabouts and her safe return. Observers and party members have directly connected her detention to upcoming countrywide demonstrations scheduled for September 27, during which protesters intend to march toward the capital city of Islamabad.

The government's arrest documentation contends that Khanum was organizing individuals to create disruptions in public order and encouraging the general public to chant objectionable slogans against the administration. In anticipation of the planned demonstrations, authorities have already positioned shipping containers along streets in Islamabad to secure key government infrastructure.

According to local media reports, Pakistan's interior minister has stated that the planned demonstrations are detrimental to the nation and vowed that the government will take all necessary measures to halt them.

Imran Khan has remained incarcerated since 2023, following an initial three-year prison sentence for failing to declare proceeds from the sale of state gifts received during his tenure in office. The former cricket star-turned-politician has faced more than 100 legal cases, encompassing allegations from the leakage of state secrets to additional corruption charges, all of which he and his supporters maintain are politically motivated.

Among his legal challenges, Khan received a 14-year prison sentence last year in connection with a land corruption case, marking the longest term handed down to him thus far. Concerns regarding his well-being have also surfaced during his incarceration, including a hospital visit last month for a medical examination.

The detention of Khanum highlights ongoing political tensions in Pakistan as the PTI party prepares for its upcoming mobilization. Both domestic and international observers continue to monitor the situation closely as the scheduled protest date approaches.
