A New York man who spent nearly ten months searching for employment has recounted a frustrating start to his return to the workforce, stating that his new job lasted just two and a half hours after a staffing agency dismissed him over alleged hygiene issues. The individual, identified by the New York Post as 35-year-old Chris Smalls, shared his unusual ordeal on social media, detailing a swift and confusing sequence of events on his first day.

According to his account published on Reddit under the username Havocko, he had been unemployed for approximately nine and a half months and had depleted his unemployment benefits by the time he secured the position through a temporary staffing agency. The role offered higher pay than his previous employment and represented a welcome opportunity to return to work.

Preparations for his first day had been meticulous. The night before starting, he took a shower and laid out a brand-new polo shirt to wear the following morning. When he arrived at the office, his initial hours appeared to proceed without incident. A supervisor provided a tour of the workplace—noting facilities like a stocked kitchen and bathroom—and outlined his duties before handing his training over to another employee around 10:00 a.m.

Shortly after training began, however, workplace dynamics shifted. The supervisor instructed him to take an early lunch before noon and subsequently called his trainer into a private meeting. When the trainer returned, she informed him that she had other tasks to complete and asked him to wait at his desk. As he was preparing to leave for lunch as previously directed, the temp agency contacted him to announce that his assignment was terminated immediately.

The stated reason for the sudden dismissal was a "hygiene issue," an explanation that left the worker completely stunned. He maintained that he was well-groomed, had showered prior to arrival, and wore a brand-new shirt. In his online post, he noted that the only minor flaw might have been that his trousers required a lint roller.
