Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso stated that the club's goals remain 'very clear' following the departure of Todd Boehly and the acquisition of full control by Clearlake Capital.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has declared that the Premier League club's ambitions remain "very clear" following a major ownership restructure that ends Todd Boehly's tenure as chairman. The announcement was made public late on Wednesday, confirming that Clearlake Capital will acquire the stakes held by Boehly and director Mark Walter.
The high-profile ownership shift concludes a partnership that began in May 2022, when US billionaires Boehly and Walter joined forces with Clearlake to purchase the London club from Roman Abramovich in a sale mandated by the British government. Prior to this latest transaction, Clearlake held a 61.5 percent stake in the club, with Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss dividing the remaining shares.
According to the Financial Times, Boehly and Walter are set to receive approximately 950 million pounds, equivalent to about $1.27 billion, for their combined stakes. The overall transaction values Chelsea at roughly five billion pounds, including debt. Following the agreement, Chelsea confirmed that Hansjorg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner within the ownership group.
In addition to their exit from Chelsea, Boehly and Walter have also sold their stakes in French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, a partner club, leaving Clearlake with full control there as well. Boehly and Walter maintain other major sports investments, including co-ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. Walter also recently completed the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball franchise for $12.5 billion.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday ahead of Chelsea's Premier League fixture away at Brentford on Friday, manager Xabi Alonso addressed the leadership transition. Alonso, who took charge at Stamford Bridge on July 1 after previously managing Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, described the development as an important day for the organization.
Alonso expressed gratitude to the departing executives, noting that while he was not at the club during their initial tenure, he recognized the significant role they played. With Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali stepping into a position of near-full control alongside co-founder Jose E Feliciano, Alonso welcomed the streamlined leadership structure.
The Spanish coach emphasized his positive working relationship with Eghbali, recalling that Eghbali was the key figure who traveled to Madrid to outline the project and convince him to take the job. Alonso acknowledged that building sustained success takes time, but reiterated that the ultimate goals for the squad are unmistakable.
Chelsea released an official statement echoing those sentiments, stating that their ambition is to compete at the highest level, secure major trophies, and construct lasting success. Since the 2022 takeover, the club's highest domestic finish was fourth place in the 2024-25 season, a campaign that also saw the team claim victories in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, the club experienced a difficult domestic campaign last season, finishing a disappointing 10th in the Premier League. Alonso was brought in with a specific mandate to revitalise the underachieving squad. The Blues have experienced a mixed start to the current campaign, accumulating seven points from their opening four Premier League matches to sit in sixth place in the league table as the new ownership era begins.
