Man Charged With Causing Death by Dangerous Driving Over A61 Crash That Killed Six

A 50-year-old man faces six counts of causing death by dangerous driving following a devastating collision on the A61 in West Yorkshire that resulted in the deaths of six people, including two young children. According to reports from the BBC, Christopher Cockell has been summoned to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court in October to face the charges.

The fatal incident occurred on 21 July 2024 along a stretch of the A61 situated between Barnsley and Wakefield. The crash involved a silver Ford Focus and a BMW motorcycle, taking place on a single-carriageway section of the road between Staincross and Newmillerdam that carries a 50mph speed limit.

Among the victims were Shannen Morgan and Shane Roller, alongside two of their young daughters: nine-year-old Rubie and four-year-old Lillie. The family, residing in the Athersley area of Barnsley, tragically lost their lives at the scene when their car collided with the motorcycle, spun to the side of the road, and caught fire. Emergency responders and paramedics arrived, but it was impossible to release the occupants, and all four were pronounced dead at the location.

A married couple traveling on the motorcycle also perished in the crash. Christopher Barton, 56, and his 48-year-old wife, Janine Barton, both from Barnsley, were killed after recently celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Previous hearings at Wakefield Coroner's Court detailed that the collision happened as the motorcycle was overtaking another vehicle. A pathologist concluded Mr. Barton's provisional cause of death was head and chest injuries, while Mrs. Barton was thrown onto an adjacent golf course and suffered fatal chest injuries.

An inquest previously explored the mechanics of the collision, which prompted extensive investigations by local authorities. West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the latest charges were brought forward following thorough inquiries conducted by the force's Major Collision Enquiry Team. Authorities stated that Cockell, whose address is listed as Gresford Close in Woolley Grange, was already facing an existing charge of failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

The tragedy sent profound shockwaves through the local community, leaving behind grieving relatives and friends. Shannen Morgan and Shane Roller left behind another daughter, aged 11, who was not present at the time of the incident. In the wake of the tragedy, a family friend established an online fundraising campaign that ultimately raised more than £400,000 to support the surviving child.
