Brynna Mother Undergoes Lifesaving Transplant After Facebook Plea Reaches Total Stranger

A mother-of-four from Brynna, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has successfully undergone a lifesaving kidney transplant after a total stranger answered a desperate plea she shared on Facebook. Karen Davey, 41, had exhausted all other avenues before turning to social media, stating that she did not want to leave her family without a mother. Gary Summerfield, a 60-year-old security guard from Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent, saw the post by chance, discovered he was a match, and proceeded with the donation.

According to BBC Wales, the successful six-hour surgical procedure took place on July 15 at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. For Karen, this marked her second major organ transplant. Ten years prior, at the age of 31, she suffered a heart attack while watching her son play football and subsequently underwent a lifesaving heart transplant.

Following a heart transplant, patients must take medication to suppress their immune systems, which increases the risk of infections. Karen noted that medical professionals kept her medication dosage as low as possible because they knew the drugs would eventually damage her kidneys. She acknowledged that coping mentally with the certainty of future kidney failure was difficult. When she reached stage three kidney failure and learned that her friends and family were not compatible matches, she decided to post her appeal on Facebook.

In her social media post, Karen explained that she had a relatively rare blood type and described how the kidney failure had placed her life on hold. Her primary motivation was her children. Her eldest child is now 22, and she is also a grandmother to a one-year-old. Reflecting on her medical history, she noted that her children were ten years younger when she received her heart transplant, and the kidney failure presented just the next hurdle.

Gary Summerfield stumbled upon Karen's appeal and felt compelled to act after reading about her children. Noting that Karen was of a similar age to his own daughter and that her youngest child was the same age as his grandson, he felt deep empathy for the family. He reasoned that if his own daughter were in the same position, he would want a stranger to step forward if family options were exhausted, calling it selfish not to help. Gary remarked that the lady needed one of his kidneys more than he needed two.

Despite never having met Karen, Gary immediately volunteered to be tested. He underwent extensive medical evaluations, including psychological assessments, compatibility testing, blood tests, and cholesterol checks. Gary reported that he never experienced any second thoughts throughout the rigorous process.

Data from NHS Blood and Transplant indicates that the average wait time for a deceased donor kidney transplant in the UK is two to three years, whereas a living donor transplant typically reduces that timeframe to about three to six months. Karen was able to bypass the longer waiting period thanks to Gary's direct intervention.

Following the July operation, Karen reported feeling one hundred times better. Gary expressed his joy at seeing her looking so well when they reunited after the procedure, describing the donation as one of the top three events of his life, alongside getting married and having his children.

Karen's husband, Matthew, expressed deep gratitude to Gary on behalf of the family, noting that the gesture restored hope in humanity during difficult times. He stated that they would never be able to repay Gary and his family for giving Karen another chance to be a mother to their children and live a deserving life, describing the donation as the gift of life.

Karen praised the selflessness of a stranger willing to undergo extensive medical testing and invasive surgery for someone they did not know, calling the experience mind-blowing. Her 17-year-old son, Brandon, also shared that seeing his mother on the road to recovery and looking healthier than she had in a long time was amazing, adding that while surgeries are frightening, families must hold onto hope.

Gary concluded that Karen and her family were extremely deserving, while the family continues to celebrate her recovery and the kindness of a stranger who stepped forward when all other options had been exhausted.
