Minneapolis Releases Videos and 911 Transcripts Detailing Deadly Apartment Building Shooting

Newly released video footage and 911 transcripts provide a detailed account of a deadly Sept. 2 shooting inside a Minneapolis apartment building. The materials, made public on Wednesday by the City of Minneapolis, shed light on the actions of the gunman, Carlton Johnson, and the subsequent response by local law enforcement officers.

The incident resulted in the deaths of two building residents and left five other individuals injured. Among the wounded were two police officers, the mother of Johnson's child, and two building employees. Johnson was ultimately shot and killed by police at the scene.

According to reporting by Mark Vancleave and Hallie Golden of ABC News, the newly published videos capture the exact moment two officers were wounded on an upper floor while pursuing the gunman. The officers had rushed into the building to secure the premises as residents remained trapped inside during the active shooter situation.

Footage from the scene shows officers approaching a victim who was sprawled on the floor of a hallway. Johnson suddenly appears from around a corner, brandishing a handgun, and opens fire on Officer Joseph Michnowski. Michnowski can be seen retreating past the victim as additional gunfire echoes through the corridor.

Radio communications captured Michnowski reporting his injuries from the scene, stating that he had taken rounds while the shooter was positioned on the ninth floor. Other responding officers quickly sought cover near a stairwell landing, calling out to check on their colleague's condition.

Additional shots were fired by Officer Yahye Mahmed Ahmed from the stairwell landing while he aimed his weapon down the hallway. Shortly afterward, yellow smoke filled the doorway, and officers withdrew down the stairs after Ahmed reported that he had also been struck by gunfire.

The violence began when Johnson shot and wounded a woman identified as the mother of his child, according to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Authorities confirmed that the child present during the incident was not injured.

A rapid succession of emergency calls began shortly after 4:30 p.m. as residents and staff sought shelter. Transcripts released by officials illustrate the fear experienced by those inside the building, with wounded victims lying on the ground and others hiding in secure locations while pleading for assistance.

In one of the 911 calls, a wounded victim informed a dispatcher that she had been shot in the legs and was unable to move, while her child remained with her. The dispatcher assured her that emergency assistance was actively being dispatched to her location.

Another call featured a building office employee who had barricaded herself inside a storage room. She expressed uncertainty about whether the gunman remained active in the lobby and stated she would remain in hiding until police arrived on the scene.

Investigators established that after shooting two building employees in the lobby area, Johnson used an elevator to reach the ninth floor. On that upper level, he killed two residents before law enforcement officers fatally shot him. Superintendent Evans noted that investigators had not yet determined whether Johnson specifically targeted those residents or encountered them by chance in the hallway.

Background information surrounding the shooter indicates that prior tensions existed at the property. Building owners were actively pursuing eviction proceedings against Johnson. Furthermore, law enforcement officials, court records, and residents confirmed that Johnson had previously threatened neighbors and warned of plans to shoot individuals.

Prior to the deadly attack, at least one individual had sought a restraining order against Johnson. Police records also show that law enforcement investigated Johnson in June after he displayed a weapon, though the county attorney's office ultimately decided against filing criminal charges at that time.
