Socceroos Star Cristian Volpato Set for Court Battle Over Drug Driving Charge

Socceroos midfielder Cristian Volpato is preparing for a legal battle in court after his legal representative confirmed plans to contest a charge brought by New South Wales Police alleging he drove with cocaine in his system. According to ABC Australia, the 22-year-old professional athlete intends to fight the allegations.

The case stems from a traffic stop on Sydney's Anzac Bridge on July 24. Police pulled over Volpato after he was detected driving at 109 kilometres per hour in a designated 60km/h zone. During the stop, the soccer player returned a positive roadside reading for cocaine.

Following the initial roadside detection, Volpato sought independent testing at a private clinic, where he reportedly returned a negative result. However, law enforcement subsequently directed him to undergo a secondary oral fluid test. That second police test once again confirmed a positive result for the presence of cocaine.

As a consequence of the secondary positive test, Volpato received a $722 fine. On Thursday, his lawyer, Paul McGirr, officially confirmed to AAP that the player has elected to take the legal matter to court rather than accept the outcome without a contest.

Throughout the ordeal, Volpato has consistently maintained his innocence. He has insisted publicly that he never knowingly ingested the illicit substance. Additionally, his Italian club side, Sassuolo, reported that the player also underwent a drug test upon returning to Italy, which produced a negative result.

The Sydney-born athlete entered the broader public sporting spotlight as a late inclusion for the Socceroos' World Cup campaign. He made headlines by switching his international football allegiance from Italy to Australia right on the eve of the tournament.

Football Australia has acknowledged the ongoing legal situation. A spokesperson for the governing body confirmed in a statement provided to AAP that the organization is fully aware of the reports concerning Volpato and a traffic matter currently subjected to an active police process.

The spokesperson added that because the legal matter remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate for Football Australia to make any further public comments at this current time.

Despite the ongoing nature of the police process and court challenge, the positive reading on Volpato's secondary police test carries potential consequences for his athletic career. Industry sources previously informed AAP that the player could face a summons before Football Australia's disciplinary and ethics committee. Under its powers, the governing body holds the authority to suspend him from national team duties.

On the club front, the 22-year-old currently plays in Italy's Serie A with Sassuolo. However, he is presently unavailable for selection due to a right leg injury that he sustained during a match against Bologna earlier this month.

As the legal proceedings move forward, the timeline for the court appearance remains tied to the local judicial process in New South Wales. Both his club and national federation will be monitoring developments closely as potential disciplinary implications loom alongside his recovery from the leg injury.
