Trump Proposes Triumphal Arch in Washington DC as Military Complex for Drones and Snipers

US President Donald Trump has announced that a massive triumphal arch he intends to build in Washington DC would be adapted to serve as a top-grade military complex. According to reporting by ABC News, citing information originally published on Sunday, the proposed structure would be capable of hosting drones and snipers while storing ammunition.

In a social media statement detailed by ABC News, Mr Trump stated that the decision to incorporate military functionality came at the strong request of the armed forces. The 76-metre-tall memorial arch is planned for a location between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, specifically positioned on a circle adjacent to the Memorial Bridge.

Under the updated vision outlined by the US president, the complex would be equipped to house and rapidly deploy large numbers of drones. Additionally, the structure would accommodate snipers on both its roof and plaza areas, alongside dedicated storage facilities for large quantities of sniper ammunition.

The announcement comes as the ambitious architectural undertaking faces significant legal challenges. Groundbreaking for the arch had initially been scheduled to take place during the month of September. However, ongoing opposition has created hurdles for the timeline.

A legal challenge has been brought against the project by a group consisting of three military veterans and an architectural historian. The plaintiffs argue that the development requires explicit approval from the United States Congress before it can proceed.

Despite these legal obstacles, the project has previously secured early approval from the US Commission of Fine Arts. ABC News noted that members of this commission were appointed by Mr Trump. Nevertheless, final regulatory clearance remains pending.

The project still requires authorization from the National Capital Area Planning Commission. While the commission previously green-lit the site and preliminary plans during a meeting in July, it is expected to review the matter again in the coming months.

The proposed arch is one of several infrastructure and beautification initiatives pursued by the US president to establish a lasting physical imprint on the nation's capital.
