Ukraine Fires Over 1,000 Drones at Russia in Largest Ever Strike on Moscow

Ukrainian forces launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia overnight, including hundreds directed at Moscow during the final day of the country's parliamentary elections. Officials reported that the wave of aerial strikes caused damage to the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building.

According to Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov, the wider regional impact of the attack resulted in two deaths, a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, alongside 20 reported injuries. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin characterized the offensive as an unprecedented and largest-ever attack on the capital, stating that air defense systems intercepted roughly 450 drones heading toward Moscow.

Russia's Ministry of Defense announced that its forces successfully shot down a total of 1,110 Ukrainian drones across Russian territory, as well as over the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula and the Black Sea. Despite the scale of the bombardment, Mayor Sobyanin claimed that the military effort to disrupt the parliamentary elections ultimately failed.

The widespread aerial assault occurred as the Kremlin concluded the third and final day of its wartime parliamentary elections. The voting process has been heavily criticized as lacking meaningful opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration. Balloting also took place in Crimea, which was annexed in 2014, and in four other Ukrainian regions illegally annexed after the full-scale invasion began more than four years ago. Kyiv strongly condemned the electoral process as unlawful, and Russia's Central Election Commission reported that a member of a local electoral committee was killed in a Ukrainian attack in a Russian-occupied section of the Kherson region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on social media that Kyiv utilized a combination of drones and domestically produced missiles, including the Flamingo and Pelican systems, to strike critical oil and logistics infrastructure. Zelenskyy emphasized that these actions targeted the financial assets sustaining the Russian military campaign, with the broader objective of compelling Moscow to pursue peace negotiations.

As ground fighting along the approximately 1,250-kilometer front line in eastern and southern Ukraine remains largely deadlocked by robotic systems and dense drone surveillance, both nations have increasingly relied on long-range aerial campaigns. Over the years of conflict, Ukraine has advanced significantly in domestic military drone manufacturing, gaining international recognition for its defense innovations.

Amid the ongoing exchange of strikes, civilian areas on both sides continued to suffer casualties. President Zelenskyy reported that a Russian drone strike targeted a monastery in Ukraine's Kherson region, resulting in the death of a clergyman and four injuries. In a separate weekend assault on the capital of Kyiv, local officials reported that a mother and two children were killed, with another injured child passing away in the hospital.

Diplomatic developments also unfolded alongside the military escalation. President Zelenskyy noted that he engaged in a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which the leaders arranged an upcoming meeting scheduled for the following week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
