Ukrainian Drone Strike on Moscow Kills Two and Hits Oil Refinery Amid Parliamentary Elections

A series of major drone strikes has targeted both the Russian capital and the Kyiv region in Ukraine, resulting in multiple casualties and significant damage to energy and industrial infrastructure. According to local authorities, a Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region killed two people and hit an oil refinery, marking one of the largest aerial assaults on the Russian capital since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that more than 1,600 drones had been intercepted by Russia since Saturday, with approximately 450 aimed specifically at the capital. Sobyanin confirmed that numerous drones penetrated defenses to reach the oil refinery, while another struck an apartment building. The exact scale of the damage sustained by the refinery has not yet been officially confirmed.

The large-scale attack coincided with the final day of Russia's three-day parliamentary election. Mayor Sobyanin asserted that the unprecedented assault was deliberately planned with the intention of disrupting the ongoing electoral process.

Energy infrastructure has remained a frequent target in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, persisting despite assertions from US President Donald Trump that both sides had previously agreed to halt such attacks. Ukraine's strategy of targeting oil refineries has caused noticeable disruptions, leading to domestic oil product shortages and rising fuel prices within Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the operation, stating on X that the strike had a very significant impact. Zelenskyy argued that the oil processed at the targeted facility generates billions of dollars that help sustain Russia's military operations. He further contended that Moscow must end the war and choose peace rather than prioritizing layered rings of air defense at the expense of other regions.

Meanwhile, in the Russian-occupied eastern Ukrainian region of Kherson, a separate drone strike targeted a bus and resulted in two deaths, including an electoral official, according to the Russian state news agency RIA.

Simultaneously, the war continued to claim lives within Ukraine. Local authorities reported that four people were killed during a Russian drone attack in the Kyiv region. The casualties included a mother and her twin three-year-old children, as well as another young girl who succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a hospital in a different district. Homes and industrial buildings sustained structural damage in the southwestern Fastiv district of the region.

Further military actions were claimed by Russia's Defense Ministry, which stated that its forces struck a warehouse belonging to drone and missile manufacturer Fire Point in the Kyiv region. The ministry additionally reported hitting a cargo vessel and a postal logistics center in the Odesa region, asserting that both facilities were utilized for military shipments. Russian forces have consistently carried out recurring drone attacks targeting the Ukrainian capital and surrounding areas in recent weeks.

The combination of escalating drone operations around Moscow during a national election and the deadly strikes inside Ukraine highlights the ongoing intensity of the conflict. With both sides continuing to target critical energy and industrial supply lines, the broader humanitarian and economic toll continues to mount across the region.
