Australian Scientist and Innovators Develop Thermal Conversion and Repurposing Methods to Divert Waste from Landfills

Academic Lynne Loo and various startups are utilizing thermal conversion and other innovative processes to transform waste materials into vinegar, biochar, oil, paper, and leather products in Australia.

Most municipal and industrial waste traditionally heads straight to landfills, but a growing contingent of researchers and startups are exploring unexpected ways to give discarded materials a second life. According to data from the Australian government's Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the country generates 76 million tonnes of waste annually. This equates to approximately 2.9 million tonnes per person, with a significant portion ending up buried or discarded.

Ten years ago, academic and scientist Lynne Loo began researching methods to repurpose waste in Australia. Her initial investigations focused on waste originating from the abalone industry. Over time, Loo's work evolved from an academic research project into a broader mission to help startup businesses discover new commercial value in items that are normally thrown away.

Today, Loo applies her expertise to assist emerging enterprises by acting as a reliable waste broker. In this capacity, she helps startup founders navigate what to do with their materials and connects them with viable markets. One such innovator is Matt Barber, who operates a homemade laboratory dedicated to extracting cellulose from food waste.

Barber processes the extracted pure cellulose into alternative paper, leather, and wood products. He notes that the material can also be adapted for use as a bioplastic or various other applications. According to Barber, utilizing this method allows materials to be grown in a week instead of waiting 75 years to grow a tree. Barber credits Loo's assistance as a waste broker as a crucial element in making his operational system function successfully.

Scaling up these circular economy concepts further, a facility located in Collie, Western Australia, operated by Renergi, applies thermal conversion technology to process rubbish. Deejay Parker of Renergi explains that the facility can handle just under 30,000 tonnes of biomass waste annually, alongside 4,000 tonnes per annum of the town's municipal solid waste.

Through Renergi's thermal conversion process, more than 70 per cent of the incoming material is recovered and transformed into useful products, including vinegar, biochar, and oil. The resulting biochar is already being actively deployed on fruit farms and at a winery situated across Southern Western Australia.

The Renergi project has secured financial backing from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency as part of broader national efforts to expand renewable and sustainable technologies into regional areas. Once the facility achieves full operational capacity, it is anticipated to become one of the nation's largest producers of its kind.

Reflecting on the progress of these diverse recycling and repurposing initiatives, Loo emphasizes the importance of demonstrating practical success in the face of widespread skepticism. Her ongoing efforts, alongside those of independent operators and regional facilities, highlight the ongoing shift toward rethinking waste management practices in Australia.
