Oklahoma has launched a $408 million project to build a modern four-lane bridge over Lake Texoma, replacing the aging 1945 Roosevelt Bridge while keeping the original structure open to traffic during construction.

More than 80 years after the original Roosevelt Bridge opened across Lake Texoma, Oklahoma transportation officials have initiated a record-setting project to build its modern replacement. According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, the new initiative carries a value exceeding $408 million and aims to replace the aging US-70 crossing while maintaining traffic flow on the existing route throughout the construction period.

The original US-70 Roosevelt Bridge opened in 1945, establishing a vital transportation and economic link between Bryan and Marshall counties in southeastern Oklahoma. Stretching approximately 4,900 feet, the historic structure features 87 spans, including a distinctive Warren through-truss central span noted as the last surviving highway example of its type in the state with a polygonal top chord.

After more than eight decades of service, the aging bridge reached the end of its useful lifespan. Evaluations by transportation authorities determined the structure was at risk of becoming structurally deficient and classified it as functionally obsolete, triggering extensive planning for a contemporary alternative.

The replacement venture ranks among the largest bridge investments in Oklahoma history. The $408 million contract was awarded to a joint venture comprising Zachry Construction and Traylor Bros, backed by state funds alongside a $124 million federal Bridge Investment Program grant.

Plans for the new crossing feature a modern four-lane configuration across Lake Texoma, accompanied by upgraded US-70 approaches. The design incorporates full shoulders, enhanced lighting, and a dedicated pedestrian path to resolve ongoing capacity and safety limitations on the current corridor.

The route functions as a crucial regional artery connecting southern Oklahoma with northern Texas, supporting daily commuters, freight carriers, tourism, and local commerce. Recent traffic data indicates that over 11,000 vehicles utilize the crossing daily.

To deliver the project, officials are employing a modified progressive design-build approach for the first time. This collaborative framework allows the department of transportation and the construction team to coordinate closely during early planning phases to maximize efficiency in scheduling, design, and expenditure.

Early construction activities are already underway at the site. Crews are clearing trees and preparing staging areas, while barges have begun drilling into the lakebed to examine subterranean soil conditions where the piers of the new bridge will be anchored. Lake Texoma reaches depths of roughly 65 feet near the existing span, introducing distinct engineering challenges.

Motorists will continue utilizing the existing bridge while the replacement structure is built alongside it, preventing immediate disruptions to travel. Once finished, the new crossing is projected to deliver four lanes of modern roadway, substantially enhancing reliability and safety for travelers moving between Oklahoma and Texas.

Construction is slated to span approximately three years, with a target completion date set for fall 2029. The undertaking marks the eventual retirement of a critical postwar infrastructure asset in favor of a modern corridor engineered to handle regional traffic for decades ahead.
