Each of these locations recorded temperatures at least 12 degrees Fahrenheit above normal for that time of year. Notably, Nashville surpassed a daily high record originally set nearly a century prior in 1927, following a record-high minimum temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius) the day before.

Explaining the meteorological mechanics behind the event, NASA noted that a heat dome forms when a high-pressure ridge aloft forces hot air downward and traps it over a region. This atmospheric setup suppresses convection, cloud formation, and precipitation. Consequently, sunlight reaches the Earth's surface largely unhindered, causing surface air temperatures to rise even further.

This unseasonable September heat wave followed on the heels of a historic summer season. According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the contiguous United States experienced its warmest June-through-August period in a 132-year instrumental record. The three-month stretch in 2026 surpassed previous temperature records set in 1936 and 2021 by 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit, underscoring a broader pattern of elevated seasonal temperatures observed by Earth science researchers.
